Midnight in Paris

I finally saw Midnight in Paris and I don't want to give away too much, but i'd say it's definitely worth seeing. Before I saw it, I had pretty low expectations. I wanted to see the movie that everyone was talking about, but also was prepared to be sorely disappointed if it turned out to be a predictable rom-com with some pretty scenery and cliched vignettes of the City of Lights. However, it's a rare treat to leave a movie feeling inspired and thoughtful, and Midnight in Paris achieves just that. I must also confess that I'm a sucker for the "lost generation" with Matisse being one of my favorite artists and Fitzgerald my favorite author...so take that for what you will. What do you think...did you see it and love it or are you going to skip this recent Woody Allen flick?

Happiest of Mondays, dear readers! I hope you were able to find some rest and relaxation over the quick weekend...can you believe we are almost in July?? I spent Saturday at the Treasure Island Flea market (check photos here) and absolutely LOVED it! I highly recommend it, especially to you Alameda junkies...this place is pure magic. Sunday was super relaxing and I was able to get caught up on a few things and get organized for the week ahead. It's no secret every girl loves a good sale. But guys? Another story. I know the longer my bf has to rummage through racks, the more beer will be consumed at the end of the day. So, what's a guy got to do to scoop up some deals? Head to your local premium outlets, with one thing on your mind: accessories. They make an outfit instantly look put together, and if you buy quality, timeless pieces (within your budget), it's a sure fire way to at least look like you know what you're doing when you get dressed in the morning. Premium outlets can be a total cluster, but it's a great way to buy designer duds that would otherwise be totally unattainable. Plus, with accessories, there are no long lines for the dressing room, and not much browsing. You're in and out...just in time to grab 1 beer...ok, maybe 2.

Spacing

When I read this article on Apartment Therapy, something clicked in my mind. The light bulb went off and I instantly knew all the secrets of the universe (ok, maybe not the universe, but I swear angels were singing). The ultimate secret I learned? Spacing. One word unlocked all the mystique around what makes a great looking room look great. Kind of a no brainer, I know, but seriously these tips will change your life. So take a look at my favorite tips below and re-examine the photos above...I swear, the angels will be singing.

Dining Room (image 1)
-Area rug and dining table- A rug should span about 36" wider on all sides of the table to allow chairs to pull out easily without catching
-Space between dining chairs: Ideally provide about 24" between chairs to prevent hitting elbows and to allow people to slide chairs in and out without any collisions or bruised knuckles.

Living Room (image 2)
-Distance between a sofa and coffee table: Allow around 18" between the table and sofa edge to give enough leg room but to be able to set down drinks or reach appetizers without straining. Coffee table heights vary greatly, but a good rule is to keep the table height and seat height within 4 inches of each other.
-Distance between seating furniture: Aim to provide between 3.5' and 10' between seating options to help conversation flow without crowding a room.
-Area rugs and furniture: Too often area rugs end up feeling like bath mats. To keep your area rug from feeling random, at least the front two legs of a sofa or chair should rest on the rug.
-Side table and sofa height: In general, an end table should be approximately the same height as the arm of your sofa or chair. This allows guests to set down or reach for drinks without straining, and it also lends a more cohesive feel to the room. (image 3)

It's time for a re-do. It's my blog and I'll do what I want to...While I still stand by my original 5 steals and a splurge, after seeing all of these fabulous ladies share their ideas, I want a re-do. So people, here you have it, my new and improved 5 steals and a splurge (and not to worry, regular scheduled programing with other bloggers will resume next week).

1. Strings of lights- Not only for Christmastime anymore. White lights year round make everyday merry and bright.
2. Sparkling water- For whatever reason, I always feel more fancy drinking sparkling water rather than still water. I don't like soda, so this is my favorite refreshment for hot summer days.
3. Maxi dresses- Perfect for day or night, warm or cool. Pair it with boots or sandals, add a scarf or an arm full of bangles, this is the most versatile thing I own.
4. Mason jars- Fill em with grains, flowers, or votives, they make any display seem unexpectedly special.
5. American Apparel clutch- While I would love a Clare Vivier clutch, this waaaay more affordable substitute will totally do the trick. Plus, they come in a whole plethora of colors.
SLURGE: Lo and Sons O.G. bag- I've been on the hunt for a versatile school bag for this fall. I'm predicting extra long hours ahead spending days at a time on campus, and I need a bag that will not only carry my books, but also pack the rest of my life with me.

I've been neglecting this little blog a bit more than I was anticipating when I started this whole freelance lifestyle back in May. As summer rapidly zooms by me, I've decided to take advantage of this great opportunity to enjoy my summer, figure out what I want to get out of grad school, and begin this great adventure! Blog posts will be fewer and more far between, but I will still be updating my twitter and pinterest like a fiend, providing content on design, interiors, fashion, and entrepreneurship. I'm still deciding if I want to maintain my blog while in school, and would love to hear your thoughts on whether or not it is feasible to keep up with school, work, homework, and blogging. Any other suggestions besides blogging? (I can't just quit cold turkey!!) Maybe tumblr? Would love to hear your thoughts!

Happy Monday! Kelley and I decided to take an impromptu trip to LA to celebrate a friend's birthday, visit my bf, and get some LA sun! We hiked up near the Hollywood sign yesterday, and have big plans to lounge at the beach today (and of course get some work done). #1 - MAC Lipstick in Hue $14.50 - I love wearing nude shades of lipstick in summer and this MAC liptsick is a staple for me.
#2 - The Body Shop Bronzing Powder $18.50 - This is an amazing bronzer for a great price. I use it all year round and have repurchased it many times. A bit of bronzer is a great way to add some tan and glow to the face without having to spend hours out in the Sun.
#3 - Zara Layered Cotton Dress $39.90 - Cotton dresses are essential for me in summer - they're easy to throw on and feel feminine and lightweight. I also like to style them with a simple brown leather belt to accentuate the waist.
#4 - Netflix Movies $7.99 - $20 - I look forward to weekend movie nights with my fiance -it's a great way to rewind after a long day at work.
#5 - Fiji Water - $2.50 - $4 - I love drinking water, but I especially love Fiji water. I take a one liter bottle to work and drink it throughout the day.
#6 - Ivanka Trump Sandals $99-$69 - For my splurge item I chose these gorgeous sandals - I've been looking for the perfect pair of summer sandals for a while and I found them! I think they're gorgeous and versatile enough to pair with weekend clothes and also wear them to work.

Ok...I admit. Totally lame title. It's true. I wanted to combine "think outside of the box" with nightstand...and this is what I came up with. Creative, I know. Anyways, sometimes a thrifty gal, or guy has to improvise when it comes to nightstands. I have one, and it's more of a side table than a nightstand. With that top image as my source of inspiration, here is what I came up with as suitable substitutes for a nightstand (check the sources of the images below, but I encourage you to peep your local flea market or craigslist for some real steals).

We all know that a classic chambray shirt is a staple in every woman's wardrobe, but what about for dudes? I'd say it's more than a staple, it's a necessity. Practically every men's line offers some version of the classic oxford, it's appropriate for any season or occasion, and is as comfortable as your favorite hoodie. These two dudes know how to rock the look, one for work and one for the weekend. Just don't pair it with jeans...even the coolest of cool can barely pull off denim on denim.

1 West Elm Porcelain Soapdish :: For a mere $6, this dish is a great way to add a hit of pattern to your bathroom, or any other space in the house. As a chronic collector, I've learned that trays have a way of making even the most random of collectibles look intentional.

2 Kate Spade Gumdrop Studs :: My closet tends to be heavy on the neutrals, so I add a huge hit of color to my outfit with a pair of these $38 beauties. Also among my favorites are the pink and black varieties.

3 Forever21 Wild Side Bangles :: Tried and true, animal prints will always be a classic. If you're scared to invest, these bangles are a safe bet at less than $7.

4 Gladiator Brass Ankle Chain :: I couldn't get over these shoe harnesses when I first came across them. Talk about an amazing way to add instant style and edge to your favorite heels! An inexpensive game-changer for only $43.

5 Scotch Naturals Polish :: What's there to say? A $15 pop of color on the nails feels feminine and can pack a real punch. This shade of magenta is bold and bright, and suitable for any season.

the Splurge :: Jayson Home and Garden Sheesha Pillows :: These have been on my list for quite some time. At $250 and $395, they might never make it to my home, but a girl can sure dream.

Indeeyo

Last night I had the pleasure of attending the launch party at ZAZA nail spa for Indeeyo, a new online clothing boutique featuring independent designers of clothing and accessories. The site takes the endless searching out of more overwhelming sites like Etsy, as the founders take careful consideration in curating their merchandise, while still providing unique pieces. The lovely Jeanne of Shop Sweet Things invited me to the event, and to be quite honest, I didn't really know what to expect. My usual partner in crime, Kelley L Cox, attended the event with me (and took all the photos you see above), and we had a blast. I mean, who could say no to a goodie bag, discounted designer duds, a free manicure, and free cakepops and champers? I'd say a job well done, and after meeting the sweet and humble founder, Jasmin (on the right in the top photo), I have high hopes for this new site. I was also fortunate enough to meet Bryna Nicole (on the left in the top photo)who was there promoting her line of handbags which are also featured on Indeeyo. Not only is she a UCLA alum (go Bruins!) but also started her successful label from scratch and was super inspiring to talk to about starting a fashion brand. All in all, it was a successful night, and I totally encourage you to check out Indeeyo!

Black and White

Just a quick post today as the next few days are going to be HECTIC! I'm heading to a launch party tonight for Indeeyo, an awesome new online clothing boutique featuring indie designers. The site is amazingly curated, so you don't have to spend endless hours searching for that perfect and unique piece. I'll be sure to give a full report after the event! These two images totally stand out to me. It's no secret I'm a sucker for neutrals, and black and white are some of my favorites. But I find it's often hard to pull off combining the two without someone asking you to refill their water (if you know what I mean). Thankfully, a cheeky shoe, or a arm full of bangles add some spice to the ensamble, while your timeless black and white shine. I'd splurge on the basics, and hit up Forever 21 for some bangles, and Aldo for thrifty shoe.

(Thought I would share this post that was meant to go live on Monday, while I get my life in gear after my loooong weekend. Plus, late is better than never, right?) Happy Memorial Day! I had a rockin' time in San Diego with my bf and old college friends. Today's 5 Steals and a Splurge is from the oh so lovely Mackenzie from Design Darling. 1. First up is this Paper Source address book ($31). One of the goals on my 101 in 1001 list is to start an address book for all my family and friends. Especially since I just graduated from college and my friends are now dispersed all over the country, I think this would be a fantastic purchase!

2. I love these Sweet Lulu party favor boxes ($8 for four). Obviously they're intended for a children's party but I think they're perfect for a summer garden party as well.

3. These Forever 21 platform wedges ($23) are a major steal. The wood wedge is a trend I can totally get behind and the navy color is an unexpected alternative to black or tan. Plus the price can't be beat!

4. I swear I'd wear these Loren Hope earrings ($40) every day year-round. Loren is one of my blog sponsors, the biggest sweetheart, and an extremely talented designer to boot! I literally want everything in her summer collection.

5. This Janet Hill print ($26) is pretty, sparkly, and affordable. That's what we call a win-win-win :)

6. This Rebecca Minkoff jacket ($325) is definitely splurge-worthy. It flew off the virtual shelves at Shopbop and I can totally see why! Its punchy color and tailored silhouette make it the perfect topper for your summer sundress.

I know most of my readers are female (and anyone who dares leave a comment is DEFINITELY female...aside from my bf), and I must admit, I don't really know much when it comes to men's fashion. But, I think it's time to learn. Whether you are a dude looking to learn about men's fashion right along with me, or a girl looking to find the perfect gift for your brother or bf, hopefully this new feature will leave you feeling inspired! Well, I FINALLY got around to reading the new Rue and not so new Lonny editions. Boy were they chock full of gorgeous images or what?? But how in the hell is a normal person supposed emulate those awesome rooms...and actually live in them? Well, look no further because today and tomorrow I'll be recapping my favorite tips from the issues, and hopefully share some inspiring images that should provide the ultimate cheat sheet. In the May/June issue of Lonny, I thought Todd's tips for creating an elegant and understated space were right on the money.

Use antique pieces and artwork from different periods to create a mix. For example, hang a modern picture over an antique console.
Always use the best things you can afford. Quality over quantity!
Don't overthink or overdo it; a little can go a long way.
Edit, edit, edit. A great room or a good design is always about editing and knowing when to stop!

I think these 4 tanks are the only ones I need all summer. The perfect mix of neutral and patterned, sleek and frilly, there's something for every occasion with these fab 4. (Kinda like the Beatles, but without the weird military attire.) Hello, hello! Happy Monday! This weekend was relaxing and hilarious all rolled up into one. I saw Bridesmaids, and I have to tell you...hands down, funniest movie you'll see all year. Hopefully my saying that won't ruin the experience for you, but I enjoyed so much, I already can't wait to watch it again. Today's 5 steals and a splurge is from my dear friend Kelley. Long time followers of this blog may remember her from antics at McCovey Cove during the world series or from outings at the Alameda Flea Market, but to me, she is a dear friend and uber talented photographer.

Hey guys! Kelley here, I'm excited to be guest posting for KC and Thrifty Solutions for an Urban Gal in this week's 5 steals and splurge. My thrifty solutions aren't quite fashion or home decor but photo fun!

1) instagram - free - Even as a professional photographer, I don't always bring my "real" camera with me, or I do, but I also want to share on Twitter (twitter.com/kelleylcox) where I am instantly. Instagram is free and has fun filters, my fav is Lord Kelvin.

2) Prints - $0.39 for 5x7: It's fun to click through albums you posted to facebook, but why not print em out! Even if you don't display them, it's great to own a collection of personal prints.

3) Frames - $1.99 Thrift Stores. I love to buy picture frames at thrift stores, take them home, paint them black (like Mick Jagger) and add them too my ongoing frame wall project. Can add images or not, and can also add mirrors, clocks, etc. With monochromatic prints and one color paint, it doesn't get too busy.

4) Zenfolio - $50/yr : Even consumer cameras are capable of beautiful high res images..that also means the files are larger and since hard drives inevitably crash, cloud storage is getting big. $50/yr for unlimited storage, hosting, pro add ons, and great customer serivce. I use it for my personal photo site, my new photo venture Collegiate Photos, and even to sell second-hand items for Treesures.

5) Camera Ring - $10: Alright, here's my fashionable bit. A fun camera ring. Shooting sports and constantly kneeling and running around, I can't quite get away with cute skirts and stilettos. So I express myself with no-hassle accessories =)

Splurge

Canon 50mm f/2.8 Compact Macro -$299.99 this lil baby will help you break away from that kit lens you've been using on your DSLR. Way less expensive than some of it's $1K+ brothers so it's still a lil thrifty. For you fashionistas, this is a perfect versatile lens for photographing full body portraits (ex: someone you might recognize) and close up accessories both shot with my 50mm.

Skunked

So my poor little pooch got skunked last night. It's tragic. Even now, miles away from her, I swear I can still smell that god awful stench. Bleh! To take me to my happy place, I'm trying to think of summer scents...of citrus and spice and the sea. Do you any of you have a favorite scent for the summer? I'm on the market for something new...I'm thinking something not too girly, and extra fresh. Thoughts?

I'm a bit later than usual because I finally wrapped up that design project I mentioned here (unfortunately, I see that that post was compromised with the Blogger mishap last week...but basically I was working on a project to reduce the use of singe-use items on college campuses). Needless to say, when we finished our deliverable, the last thing I wanted to do was go on Blogger. But now I'm back and totally excited to share with you this awesome Australian jewelry company, Spell Designs. While their prices aren't so thrifty, their blog is just as swoon worthy as their merch, so I'll settle for perusing their beautiful images, and maybe saving my pennies for that perfect bohemian piece.

My bedroom is typically currently a tranquil oasis. With all white bedding and neutral wood tones, it's more of a Scandinavian retreat than a plethora of eye candy. But I must say, I kind of LOVE these patterned bedrooms. All I need is a simple through or a tribal pillow and I can add a bit of pizzaz to my otherwise drab boudoir. What are your thoughts on the midi skirt this summer? I'm a recent convert to the maxi look, and have always loved my knee length pencil skirts for work...but calf length? Happy Monday, all! Sorry for the lack of post on Friday. It was a ridiculously hectic day and Blogger was being less than cooperative. But for now, I am free as a bird! Friday was my last day of full-time work and now I am working part time for my company and get to work on a few of my own projects before school starts in the fall.

Hi Urban Gals, I'm Christina from Down and Out Chic, and I think it's safe to say that I live for the thrill of a good thrifty find. Below are some of my favorite finds for the season and a splurge that has a permanent place on my wish list.

1). The 5x7 "zigzag" printed rug ($69) comes in three great shades and the chevron pattern is fun and modern. I love the softness of this sea foam color.

2) I recently purchased this black maxi dress from F21 ($10) an it is undoubtedly one of the most comfortable articles of clothing I own. The silhouette is flattering and can be dressed up or down. I don't generally have a lot of luck at F21 so I was pleasantly surprised by this dress. I think I might need to stock up on multiples!

3) A classic fedora is a must for days when my hair refuses to behave or when I want to add a bit of edge to a frilly dress. This cuban style by The Hatter Co. ($7.99) definitely fits the bill.

4) This handmade, cheeky leather bunting necklace ($12.50) by Super Duper Things is fun yet the gold is slightly sophisticated. I'd wear it with just about anything.

5) I bought these Deena & Ozzy sandals ($39) recently and have been wearing them nonstop. They're comfortable and have a flattering shape. Definitely order a half size down as they run a bit large.

6) The Eames molded plastic arm chair ($349) is a splurge both my husband and I can agree on. It's timeless and my home will forever feel unfinished without one. (Big Sigh).

Just like all of you (nod your head in agreement so I feel better about myself), I subscribe to nearly half a dozen deal sites that entice me daily with bigger discounts than a JC Penny's going out of business. Usually I can resist temptation and ooh and aah at the lovely merchandise, and then proceed about my day. But every once in awhile, something piques my interest and I just can't let it go. I usually go to my bf to get a second opinion, and usually he says just the right thing to talk me out of my blinding consumerism and keep on the straight and narrow of my budget. Yesterday though, I sent him the Daily Deal on HauteLook, and what did he do? He bought it up...just like that! (Only after asking me if I was a size 12...say whaaaaaaaat?...and to clear things up, no, I am not a size 12.) Plus these lovely ladies are the perfect inspiration for what to pair them with this summer. So now, with perfect summer heel in tow, I am ready for anything, and have satiated my consumer ways for at least another month.

Don't Worry Be Happy

This post is a little more personal than normal, but it's for a great cause. One of my former volleyball teammates at the University of Portland received the scariest news imaginable on April 1st this year. She was told she had a cancerous Glioblastoma stage 4 brain tumor. Inoperable and incurable. Some April Fool's joke, right? Wrong. (You can read Liz's full story here). After months of feeling ill, with no diagnosis, Liz unexpectedly went into a coma for about a week. At this time Liz received her diagnosis and subsequently made her decision to fight. I can attest to Liz's competitive drive first hand, having had the privilege of being her teammate and experiencing her drive to win and selfless manner. Liz is now undergoing chemo and radiation to try to prolong her life and spend those last precious moments with the ones she loves. While Liz does have health insurance, there are treatments that are not covered by her insurance plus numerous other costs that add up quickly. If you want to help Liz in the biggest fight of her life, you can purchase one of these "Don't Worry Be Happy" sweatshirts or shirts.

I'm entering my last week of full-time work starting on Monday. It's been a great two years, but I'm ready to enjoy my "last" free summer before grad school starts. I've got big plans to get my life in order before school starts and have a few projects in the works that I'm excited to share! Now don't get me wrong, I know NOTHING about styling interiors or products (although I may try), but there is something about these photos that is just so appealing. All of these products are made from sustainable materials and/or are from companies with outstanding environmental initiatives (well, except for my awesome vintage blouse, but it's always green to buy vintage, so before you drop some major coin on your next shopping spree, check your local thrift store to save some Benjamin's and the environment...I picked up this gem for $5 at the Alameda Flea Market). So, I totally dropped the ball and neglected to write an Eco-Chic post in honor of Earth Day last Friday. I know, bad KC. Being an environmental engineer by day kind of means I should have put a bit more emphasis on the one day a year that celebrates Mother Nature, but I figure it's better late than never, right? I'm loving these creative and unexpecting potting methods to add some extra green around your home. In order to pot those plants in a drawer, Justina suggests lining with plastic sheets, then pebbles, then potting soil.

This week's "I {HEART} This" is Easter inspired! Hooray for the end of Lent! After yesterday's post, I'm even more ready to stuff my face with sugary NOMs come Sunday. This Easter inspired roundup is not for the week of heart. Nope. I'm talkin' bright colors (there's something unsettling to me about eggs in shades of mint green, robins egg blue, and pale yellow...I think it conjures images of a gender confused baby shower...), as I was saying...bright colors, geometric prints and bohemian bangles. So back in March I thought it would be a good idea to give up sweets for Lent. That's right, 40 days of no cookies, candies, brownies, ice cream, you get the idea. Well, as those Catholics out there know, Easter is this Sunday, thus ending my period of depravity for all things fatty (and therefore delicious). Surprisingly, I'm not as bat shit crazy as I thought I would be at this stage in the game, just a mere 4 days away from the Big E. Hello everyone! It's me from Shop Sweet Things with Jeanne. I've been a fan of KC's blog for a while now, and it's been her thrifty-chic styles, down-to-earth personality, and her obsession with "menswear" that keep me coming back for more. So when KC asked me to guest post for her, I was completely flattered. While I am a lover of all things thrifty and stylish, I am also a firm believer in splurging for that one classic piece. I hope you will all enjoy my "5 Steals & a Splurge", and really, I hope my husband is reading this so he'll know exactly what to get me for my birthday this year. :) Have fun and Happy Monday!!

1. Notebooks ($4.95) - Let's face it, the cooler the notebook the more creative we get! I picked up these wonderful notebooks recently at a San Francisco Japanese store called New People, and I couldn't resist getting just one because of the cool neon colors. They come in perfectly handy for list-making and jotting down those random ideas that constantly pops up for my blog.

2. Fresh Soap Bars ($12 - $14) - I have a huge weakness for pretty packaging, and Fresh will always be on the top of my list. I bought these pretty soap bars over a year ago... not to actually use them, but to have them smelling and looking pretty on my desk. They really do make a great room freshener!

3. Statement Necklace ($38) - While this Sweet Drops Necklace from Anthroplogie would never make it to my Twenty Dollar Monday, I would never think twice about buying a chic statement necklace. This one here is not too expensive, and I think the colors for this particular piece is quite unique. I can already see myself wearing a crisp white shirt and blue jeans while easily throwing on this necklace to make a statement.

4. Reusable Shopping Bags ($6 - $12) - Sure, I enjoy grocery shopping and farmer's market trips. But I would enjoy it even more if I am going in style with these Baggu reusable shopping bags. These eco-friendly bags are so chic and inexpensive that getting just one would totally be a tease. These Baggu bags come in over 40 different colors (solids & patterns) and 3 different sizes. I can seriously use one as my lunch bag, grocery bag, and a laundry bag.

5. VIntage Magazine Print ($3) & Ikea White Frames ($10) - One of my favorite thrifty finds is this original vintage tearsheet from the late 1950's. It was an actual ad for a gasoline company, and it absolutely reminded me of Mad Men. I got this a year ago at the Cannery Row Antique Mall in Monterey , and I framed it with an inexpensive Ikea white frame. It is still one of my favorite wall arts in the house - all for just 13 bucks!

6 Tuxedo Jacket ($225) - Alright, here comes the splurge...I've seen this piece in the market for a while now, and I simply cannot get over how crazy I am with this Emersonmade's Tuxedo Jacket. It has the three C's I'm looking for - cool, chic, and classic! And I can pretty much say that this jacket is as essential as that classic trench coat you just gotta have in your closet!

I'm headed up to the lovely Lake Tahoe for a friend's birthday this weekend. He has been traveling all around the southern hemisphere for the past 4 months and I am so excited to catch up with him and hear all about his travels. This week's "I {Heart} This" features woodsy inspired decor and wardrobe pieces, plus some tasty (and over-priced) maple syrup. (I'm totally getting the hang of this no budget "I {Heart} This".) I'll be working this weekend while my friends hit the slopes, but if I can manage to look as cozy as that lass, it will all be worth it! Do you have any exciting plans this weekend?

Sorry for the brief post today, but I'm feeling slightly overwhelmed with a big work project, and am still playing catch-up after my week off in all other aspects of life. This saying is one of my favorites and keeps me motivated in pursuing my dreams and is relevant to an inspiring luncheon I attended while in LA last weekend. It just so happened that at the culmination of our road trip, UCLA was hosting an admit weekend. I was able to attend the Women's Business Connection Luncheon and meet so many talented, accomplished and inspiring women...including Dean Olian (one of the few, if not only, female Dean at a top 20 business school). She gave an excellent speech about the necessity of women mentors, and shared staggering statistics about how far women still need to go in the workplace (as in 11 out of the Fortune 500 CEOs are women). So let's stir up the pot a bit, ladies...and make some history while doing it.

Confession: See that arrow at the top of this drawing? Ya, that basic little black arrow pointing at that beautiful frame? It probably took me about 45 min. Yep, 45 frickin' minutes. I may be Photoshopped challenged for now, but in no time at all I bet I'll be able to add other basic images (maybe I'll get crazy and add a star one of these days) in under an episode of Modern Family. A girl needs goals, right? However, please note that stellar shading job I did (or hopefully I did such an outstanding job I'll be freelancing as an airbrush artist for the stars??)...I ended up having to "clone" and re-shade all around that cursed little arrow in a trial and error method for all of 45 min.

Enough of my Photoshop rant, and back to this awesome Old is New with a painted vintage frame and some sturdy twigs. I think a wide range of variations could easily be adopted, including wooden dowels, decorative nails, etc, but this image is great inspiration for creating a gorgeous way to display your jewels.

2. Gap City Flats: You can usually find me running around town in these trusty $39.50 ballet flats. They're ultra comfy (almost like wearing slippers), come in many colors and are sold with a handy bag so you can stash them in your purse for when your sky high heels inevitably give you a blister.

3. Paperless Post: I am a firm believer in sending hand-written notes, but in this day and age, sometimes the speed of email is necessary. This service makes being polite easy!

4. Lollia Breathe Petite Treat Handcreme: When my best friend introduced me to this pretty little package for $7.99, I was hooked. This creme is the perfect balance between light and creamy and it smells delicious!

5. Forever 21 Jewelry: Forever 21 is my go-to place for inexpensive costume jewelry. I receive so many compliments because you can find truly designer-looking pieces there like this $14.80 bracelet.

6. Goyard St. Louis Tote: My biggest weakness is handbags. I'm addicted! But this splurge was worth making because it is such a usable bag! I use it almost everyday so the cost per wear is fantastic, and it fits all of the junk I need. All of these kitchens have floors I would kill for. Ok, well, the last image just has a kick ass rug, but you have to admit, it's just as awesome as those tile floors. Happy Monday wonderful Thrifty readers! KC asked if I would put together a couple of my favorite steals and a splurge. I am a cut throat deal finder so I contemplated this for a long time. It was very hard to narrow down my steals and especially my splurge, but I did and here they are!

Steals:

1. Laptop cover: I have one of these and it is the best! I love protecting my laptop so why not have something that is cute and serves a function & at only $26.00 - totally worth it. Plus when you pull your computer out in the sleeve at the airport - guaranteed compliments!

2. Fresh (albertsons) flowers: no need to buy expensive fresh flowers from a florist, head on over to a grocery store & buy whatever is in season at a deal. advice: buy all of one color and put in a very simple vase - instant elegance!

3. Sunset in the Rearview music blog: My cousin, Lydia Simmons, is the founder of this site & it is an amazing resource for all things music complete with tons and tons of free downloads of fantastic songs - my current favorite sunset download is this song.

4. Button down shirt: whatever staple item I am in need of - currently button down oxfords - I always head on over to Forever 21 to get the goods. Not only are they cute - but at $12.50, you can buy two and still feel good about it!

5. Bathing suits: with the upcoming swim suit season headed our way (for those of us in jackson hole, wyoming who are in full blown winter that might be closer towards July)... I always head over to American Eagle and check out their suits. They are of great quality - and currently are having a swim suit sale so this little top is $18.37!

Splurge:

1. Ray Ban (prescription) sunglasses: I have just ordered these prescription sunglasses! Being that I can't see distances - I don't know why I didn't think about these before, but I had an ah ha moment and realized I should get my prescriptions in my shades - duh. Well, this is news to me - they can basically take any sunglasses and put my prescription in them. The ability to see is sort of priceless - and a very well spent splurge! $156.00

Well kiddos, I'm hittin' the road as this thrifty gal will be driving from Ohio to California this next week! (Technically I flew out to Ohio last night, but by the time you are reading this post, I'll be driving somewhere between Ohio and Florida.) Happy Monday! I had a wonderful weekend/adventure in Big Sur with friends. Avoiding the rain, and eating delicious foods, we celebrated a friend's birthday in nature-filled and relaxing fashion. It was perfect! This week's thrifty blogger is Bridget from Bee Lux (the very first blog I ever read!!). Her blog features the best beauty finds out there, plus loads of killer images. So, needless to say, I am thrilled that she is sharing her 5 steals and a splurge!

And with KC's beautiful blog pumping some serious thrifty finds, I was more than thrilled to participate in her showcase. I'm truly beauty obsessive- always searching and buying the next best beauty find (you should see my lipstick case). And in all honestly, I wanted to post only beauty goods. But I have decided to go outside my usual box and grace you with a variety of awesomeness. It was hard to narrow down, but I think you'll find a saucy mix that'll spark your fancy... somewhere. 3. Forever 21 scarves: I never spend more than maybe $10 on a scarf, and Forever21 never fails to produce sweet and funky prints. I always receive compliments when I wear one of these...especially stripes. A tee, jeans and one of these is my weekend uniform. ($7.80)

4. Powells Books: I'm a book junkie and am continuously browsing for my next great read. Powell's in Portland has the most amazing selection and oh so affordable, new and used. Up next, The Other Wes Moore.

5. MAC Blushcreme in Posey: I can't get enough of MAC. Their cream blush is incredible and only a tiny dab goes a long way. A perfect punch of color for that natural flush.($19.50)

6. SPLURGE: MoroccanOil Light Oil Treatment (for blondes and fine hair): My splurge isn't that intense, but after years of product build-up, curling irons and color/dye, I rely on MorrocanOil Light to replenish my dry, sad locks. Dry or wet. Overnight or after a blow-dry. ($42)

Lately, I've been feeling rather stagnant about the ole blog. I'm not too sure what direction to take with it, and I am struggling to create a "Thrifty Gal" brand. My original intent of starting this blog was to learn about the Blogger platform and figure out some basic HTML, but in the process, it has become a much needed creative outlet and has helped me develop my personal style beyond measure. I still want to bring you thrifty alternatives in regards to fashion and interior design, but I am curious what other features you might be interested in as well. Here are some ideas bouncing around in my head...

*thrifty product roundups (mostly home decor items/fashion trends)
*Etsy wish list
*mood boards (4-6 inspiring images that create a specific look)
*inspiring interiors (just pictures or with products to imitate the look)
*before and after interiors
*street style looks (just pictures or with pieces to imitate the "look for less")
*old is new (upcycling and DIY)
*products/artwork for a cause
*artists
*totally original content: photos of my outfits (probably just the clothes themselves....I doubt you will see me in front of the camera anytime soon), photos of my weekend, photos of interiors

I would totally appreciate you commenting below which of these features seem most interesting/useful, and PLEASE let me know what other features you might like viewing as well. In creating a "Thrifty Gal" brand, I am struggling to find a happy medium between what my personal style is (modern, Scandinavian design, off beat prints and cuts, timeless menswear) with finding thrifty alternatives. Sometimes I see an image that is super inspiring, but has nothing to do with finding "thrifty solutions". What do you think? Are there enough overpriced products being touted in the blog world, (and this is a refreshing alternative) or would you rather see my absolute favorites around the web regardless of price? I am hoping your comments will give me just the right push I need to take this blog by the proverbial horns and direct it in a way that is the best reflection of myself. My goal is to develop a unique brand that keeps readers coming back for more, and provides a focused message at the same time. (Or, there is a pretty big chance I'll just look like a fool if no one responds, so help a sista out!)

What do I love more than that yellow infused bedroom up top? Well, not much. But if I had to pick one stand-out, thrifty design fix, it would have to be the use of those pant hangers instead of frames. I love how casual and unexpected it looks, and as you can see, it works in the living room just as well as the bedroom.

So, apparently I missed a wild and crazy rain/hail storm while I was in New York (not to brag or anything, but I enjoyed 70 degree weather while waltzing through Central Park...just sayin'). Regardless of the weekend's weather, yesterday was the first day of spring, and the shining sun made its presence here in the bay. These photos are totally inspiring me to update my winter wardrobe and add some flowers around my apartment. There is just something about green and pink that screams S-P-R-I-N-G to me. Happy Monday, Thrifty readers! I'm so excited to share my 5 steals and a splurge with you! I have a major love for scoring good deals, and I had such a hard time choosing which items to feature because I love so many of them! But I've narrowed it down... here are a few things I can't live without:

One: Print-at-home cupcake sleeves, from SweatPeaBaby! Doesn't this make you want to throw a party?! ($4.00 for 4 patterns)

Two: My favorite hair product of ALL TIME— Kenra Platinum Silkening Gloss—smells amazing, lasts forever, and gives your hair a perfect shine without any buildup. ($11.90)

Three: I love simple frames, and Ikea is a great place to stock up and save. My fiance and I hung some cooking utensils in this big frame and put it in our kitchen! It's one of my favorite pieces in our home. ($24.99)

Four: Great news! The perfect red lipstick only costs $4.49!

Five: Forever 21 is my go-to place for trendy jewelry. I get tons of compliments on the jewelry I purchase there. This adorable bow tie necklace is officially on my shopping list. ($2.80)

Splurge: Every girl should have at least one pair of awesome fitting jeans. And when it comes to denim, you get what you pay for. My current favorite pair is by Joe's Jeans and I live in them on the weekends! (The pair you see here cost $158, but if that's not in your budget, browse second-hand stores for the same brands! My Joe's Jeans actually came from Goodwill and cost a whopping $12!)

I've got 2 blog crushes right now, and yes, they both involve closets. I don't know if it's because I'm actually nosy at heart or what, but I seriously could stare for hours at these sites. Both sites take a peek into a wildly stylish lady (some are film makers, editors, stylists...you get the picture), and pick her brain about how she accumulated such a divine closet. I think I'm so hooked on these sites because perusing is the ultimate fashion daydream, pretending that these closets and their contents are mine. I'm not a lipstick person. I bought my first lipstick last December, determined to have a bright red lip for the holidays. It was ~~not a complete catastrophe~~ mildly successful, so I decided to enlist in the help of a "professional." Enter, Beebs. My go-to-gal for all things beauty. I knew my next investment was going to be a nude color (much more versatile and fool proof for a newbie like me). She recommended the above products, and I knew they would all be winners. I went with the NARS, since my red lipstick was the same brand, and am totally happy with my purchase. SPLURGE: Le Creuset Cookware: My foodie friend got me the Mini Cocottes for my birthday, and my bf followed suit and got me a starter set for Christmas this year. Such a fabulous investment, I swear it makes everything taste better. (prices range)

So, I finally got around to watching Secrets From a Stylist with the ADORABLE Emily Henderson. (The show is on HGTV on Saturday nights at 9pm, and those are images of rooms she has styled). Not only is Emily hilarious and talented, but she breaks down her design process so anyone can follow along and imitate. Using the concept of "layering," Emily creates interiors that are textured and rich, full of life, and a perfect reflection of the homeowners. In just one episode I learned how to incorporate different design periods and styles into a cohesive looking room. Seriously, this girl is a GENIUS. And if this wasn't enough to get you hooked, Joy from oh joy! is getting an overhaul on her living room this Saturday!

Another week has come and gone! I'm super excited to spend some time at the White Elephant Sale this weekend in Oakland with my friend, Nicole. For you Bay Area folks, you should totally join in on the fun! The event is hosted by the Oakland Museum Women's Board, with all proceeds from the event going back to the museum. The sale lasts Saturday and Sunday from 10am-4pm. Get the rest of the details here. Rumor has it that you can find Frye boots for $5, and Jimmy Choo's for $30. Unheard of, right? I'm on the hunt for some huge frames, vintage artwork, and a starburst mirror. Wish me luck!

So, technically, the above photo is from a Fall 2011 collection, but I think the trend is still relevant for spring. Preppy is everywhere these days, like a waspy weekend in the Hamptons, this force de prep school is unavoidable this spring. Since this look can sometimes be a cross between Talbot's (before Julianne Moore was their go-to gal) and the Republican National Convention, I typically steer clear. BUT, I must admit Topshop has been pretty impressive with their fresh takes on this classic look. And that girl below takes Geek Chic to a whole new level. Has Steve Urkel returned from the depths of Nick-at-Nite to invade thrifty fashion everywhere? One can only hope.

I was fortunate enough to see Javier Bardem in Biutiful this weekend before the Oscars. For any of you who have seen the film, you understand how this quote resonates with me after seeing such a powerful movie that so beautifully captures moments in everyday life. Last night's SF blogger meet-up was a big success. On top of scoring these Elva Fields earrings, I met some totally awesome ladies (and hopefully improved on my socially awkward networking skills). I attended the event solo, which when combined with navigating through San Francisco in the rain, left me flustered and disheveled with I got the event. Spring 2011: 70's Comeback

The 70s are back in all of their Boogie Nights glory. That's right, high waisted pants, flowing skirts, chunky sandals, and LOTS of chiffon are making their comeback this spring. Time to raid your mama's Goodwill sack up in the attic and channel your inner Disco Diva. Key pieces include...(but OBVIOUSLY are not limited to) pant suits, floppy hats, fringed accessories, and jumpsuits (love a good jumpsuit, hate going to the bathroom while wearing one...can I get an "awk-ward"). How to keep the look current? Instead of succumbing to mustards and browns, select 70s pieces in strong neutrals like black or navy. Small Spaces

I love posting gorgeous lofts with open floor plans just as much as the next blogger, but it's hard to find their utility while I still think ramen is a suitable side dish. Let's be real, I need inspiration for small spaces on a budget. I'm currently looking periodically at places in LA just to see what's out there, and a studio is definitely on the table. I loved living by myself, but it's so darn expensive. So, a studio becomes a great alternative. Unfortunately, it can be rather difficult to master the art of creating 3 rooms (bedroom, living room, dining room) out of 1 room, but I think Paul has it mastered. Now this is a home tour I find truly inspiring! (via Apartment Therapy)

flats for days

I pretty much live in flats for many reasons. Reason #1: I don't care what you say, they are more comfortable than heels. Reason #2: It prevents me from towering over 99% of the population. Reason #3: They are so darn cute, especially these from Marais USA (officially my new shoe obsession). What, you say? Under $100 for adorable work shoes? Yeah, I'll take one of each.

Friday is here again. Normally I would insert some cheery anecdote about my plans for the weekend, but it's just one of those days, and the weather, on top of a million other things, are weighing me down. All I want to do is crawl into that bed and resume sleeping. I am looking forward to the bf coming into town today (he always comes up with the silliest ways to cheer me up) but what are your "go-to's" for getting out of a funk? I promise next week I'll resume to my normal posting and commenting and tweeting!

Spring 2011: Color Blocks

The first Thrifty Gal installment of Spring Fashion 2011 is here! (If you missed Fall Fashion 2010, check here). While there seem to be hundreds of trends this spring, I'll only be highlighting my favorites, starting with Color Blocking! (And coming from a girl who sticks to black and gray year round, this is saying something.) The look is cheerful and bold, yet also suits my minimalist tendencies. With no prints, and structural pieces, it's possible to pull of a head to toe pink and orange look without seeming overly feminine...or like a flat out freak. While these editorial shots are awe-inspiring, what's an average girl to do in order to pull off this look? I'm picturing something like Kendi below:

The key to pulling off this look is to stick to minimal pieces with structure. Lose the frills and embellishments and stick to classic pieces with clean lines.

Why use a towel rack when you could up-cycle an antique ladder? I found a plethora of these beauties at the Alameda Flea Market, but even if you have an old ladder or pieces of wood stored in the garage, it could easily find a new home in your bathroom.
