Summer 2010

Memorial Day weekend is the official start to summer in my book.  To me, Memorial Day means the Santa Cruz Boardwalk is open during the weekdays, CBVA tournaments are in full swing, and it's only a hop-skip-and a jump to the 4th of July.  In order to be fully prepared for summer though, I must have the following items in tow (plus lots of SPF).

For complete list of items and prices, click on the image.  (All items shown are under $50)

10 Must-Have's for Summer

1. Floral Dress- What is there not to love about bright florals?

2. Bright Sandal- Perfect pairing with jeans, a dress, or shorts

3. White-T- Perfectly versatile

4. Light-wash Skinny Jean- Ditto

5. 3D Flower Necklace-  I can't quite jump on the 3D movie bandwagon, but 3D necklaces...sign me up!

6. Nude Pump- Great option with said floral dress above.  And I have a feeling these will be sticking around for Fall 2010 as well.

7. Aviators- Always a good choice

8. Navy Blazer- For those chilly nights on the coast

9. Polka-Dot Bathing Suit- Cheerful alternative to stripes

10. Romper- A much cuter version of the romper you wore in your 4th grade school picture.

Back on the Saddle

What a lovely weekend at the beach!  Through lots of wind, I played in my first beach volleyball tournament in 2 years...needless to say, I was quite rusty!  But, I'm excited to start playing again.  Hope you all had a lovely weekend!

LITTER

The idea "Old is New" is really popular right now.  From recycled building materials to bamboo fabrics, recycled and green are definitely buzz words of the moment.  The girls at LITTER take this idea to a whole new level with their edgy body jewelry.  The girls use pieces of hardware (yep, the stuff you find at Ace Hardware) and vintage items to create works of art that can be displayed on any body type, shape or size.  Every piece is custom designed and handmade.  Although these pieces are not cheap, they inspire some great looks.  I love the juxtaposition of the edgy, hard look of a metal arm piece with a soft pastel dress.

And how adorable is this headpiece?

Although my style is a little more classic than edgy, LITTER's products inspire me to mix and match edgier pieces with softer staples to create an interesting look.

Pin it Forward

I'm excited to share with ya'll this new and exciting website called Pinterest.  It's a pretty fabulous way to to maintain an online collection of images.  I found out about it at sfgirlbybay's "Pin it Forward" blog post.  I was lucky enough to be one of the 300 bloggers to participate and am totally excited about it!  In two weeks I will be sharing with you all my pinboard.  My pinboard is a collection of images that showcases what home means to me.  I will then introduce the next blog that is going to be featuring their pinboard. Here is a sneak peak of my pinboard "what home means to me."

It's a great way to see a lot of inspiring ideas.  I highly recommend playing around with it.  To get started, click on the "Pin it forward" icon on my left-hand side bar.  This will take you directly to pinterest.  Once you sign up, just drag the "Pin it" application to your bookmarks bar.  When you are browsing the web and find an image you like, click the "pin it" button, and Pinterest will ask you what image from that web page you would like to "pin."  It's as simple as that!

Happy Pinning!

White Earth Studio

I stumbled across this Etsy site last night and HAD to share.  Although some pieces are pretty spendy, they are all so original and one of a kind.  I think one piece would be worth the splurge.

Bright Eyes

Man was I dragging yesterday morning.  After sleeping in until almost 11am on both Saturday and Sunday, 7am yesterday morning was quite the shocker.  However, thanks to these makeup tips, I was able to fool everyone!  Here are some helpful tips on disguising those tired eyes...

1.  Intensify your eye color by lining the base of your upper lashes.  My old standby is this NARS liner in a deep brown.
2.  Dab a light colored (white/beige/champagne) shimmery shadow on the inner corners of your eye and brow bone (it's probably ok to use a more thrifty product like the following from wet n wild).

I use this amazing product by LORAC.  One side is a concealer, the other side is a shimmery goo that is great as a highlight to eyes and cheekbones.
3.  Crimp lashes with a tool and apply 2 coats of black mascara.

Happy Tuesday!

Googlie Googlie

Think you know how to use Google?  Think again.  I found some pretty helpful tips about how to optimize my searches and thought I would share...

Things you can search directly in the Google search field
1.  Calculations- this might be more exciting for nerds like me...but all you have to do is type in .2*84 to determine how much you will save on that $84 dress that is now 20% off!
2. Convert Measurements- how many feet in a mile? type in "feet in mile" and get the conversion right away
3. Track Flights-just type in the airline and flight number to see if your next flight is going to be on-time
4. Locate Packages- all you have to do is enter "track" plus the tracking number of your package to see when it's going to arrive.
5. Look up addresses- if you know the phone number of the location you are trying to find, type it in the search bar to find the mailing address
6. Find a movie- "movies" + zip code...easy as that!
7. Listen to songs- I still prefer Pandora, but if you have a specific song you want, this is the quickest way to find it.

Other helpful tips...

To find a product you saw online, but can't remember where-
USE: intitle:
EXAMPLE: intitle:"Tory Burch flats"
..."intitle" essentially means "in the title."  By typing this with your search, Google searches the title bar of web pages (remember the colon after intitle, and no space before the quotation marks)

To narrow your search-
USE: - (minus sign)
EXAMPLE: jaguar -cars -football
if you want to search jaguar the animal, not the car or the football team

To find a verbatim phase-
USE: quotation marks

Old is New

Every year I am bound to lose one earring.  It never fails.  So what am I supposed to do with the left-over single earring?  Save it in the hopes that I'll find it's mate in some idealistic, romantic-comedy sort of way?  I think not.  Solution?  Use the single earring as a pushpin in a chic bulletin board. Tick Tock

I am loving these alarm clocks from Artecnica.  The Dada Clock is designed by Tahmineh Javanbakht and is part of Artecnica's Fall/Winter 2009 collection.  Plus, it's only $65 and instantly adds elegance and sophistication to any bedroom.  I am ecstatic about finding a well designed product for such an affordable price!
A slight improvement from the alarm clock I remember growing up with...

Happy Tuesday

After a lovely weekend, I am slowly getting back into the swing of things.  Napa was a huge success.  We ended up only going to one winery, but we made friends with our tour guide and ended up getting 4 glasses of wine and 2 wine glasses each for our $15 tour!  Turns out making friends with your tour guide is the best way to save a few greenbacks.  More posts to come...but for now here is a darling photo from The Sartorialist

How cute are these dish towels from catstudio? (all $20)
Happy Friday!

Weekend!

It's almost the weekend and I am so excited to enjoy this beautiful weather in lovely Napa with my even more lovely bf.  Trying to tackle Napa on a budget is tricky, but I think we will do a pretty good job.  Here are some ways we plan on saving this weekend:

Bring a picnic- Packing turkey sandwiches, crackers, brie, and of course grapes!
Touring 1 or 2 wineries- Checking out some wineries with tasting fees of only $5/each...plus a shout out to Brutocao Wineries...hoping to make it up to Hopland as well!
Window shop- I'm excited to check out the new downtown area at the river
Cheap and Tasty Dinner-Napa is known for its exquisite cuisine, but I don't plan on paying an arm and a leg to experience it.  Maybe we will try ZuZu for some tapas!

Hulu

I'm sure for most of you Hulu is not new news...but since I refuse to pay for cable (I have a theory that Comcast is trying to take over the world), I use Hulu as my main source of entertainment.  It's a free website, however, I have heard rumors that sometime this year they will start charging (darn it).  Here is what I am currently watching on Hulu...and obviously think you should too.

Comedy- The Office & 30 Rock

Unfortunately, I miss Thursday night TV thanks to my GMAT prep class.  But I never miss a beat with these quirky shows thanks to Hulu.  I've been watching The Office since high school, and have yet to watch a season I didn't love.  As for 30 Rock, I love everything Tina Fey works on, so naturally it has made it onto my Hulu lineup.
Musical- Glee (is there anything else?)
Originally, I was reluctant to jump on the Glee bandwagon.  But I am sooooo glad I did!  This show has everything from witty lines to dazzling musical numbers.  Jane Lynch as the sinister Sue Sylvester is reason enough to watch the show.  (Not to mention Emma Pillsbury's wardrobe...see the following blog if you are as obsessed as I am)
Family- Modern Family & Parenthood

Both of these shows depict the ups and downs of family dynamics, however the delivery of each show is very different.  Modern Family is a hilarious show full of awkward moments and lovable characters.  Parenthood is a little more dramatic, but I felt an instant connection to the characters and setting (it's set in Berkeley!).  I highly recommend both of these gems.
Reality- Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution
Last, but certainly not least is Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution.  Who can resist Jamie's adorable accent and pertinent crusade?  Watch as he transforms the most "unhealthy town in America" and chances are he will transform you too.

Heads of State

I am crazy about this design team: Heads of State.  I love all of their funky concert posters, insightful political posters, and pretty much everything they do.  I would be so stoked to get anything from their site.  I am particularly obsessed with their From Sea to Shining Sea collection, featuring cities across our great country.

Additional cities include: NYC, Philly, Chicago, Phoenix, and Washington DC.
Also loving these prints as well...
